Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour is nothing less than one of the world’s greatest singers, and as brilliant as his recordings have been (last year’s Egypt was especially potent), he earns his accolades most convincingly in a live setting. Bercy 2004 returns N’Dour to Paris, where he and his band Le Super Etoile wowed audiences as they did previously on the 2001 Le Grand Bal a Bercy album. In fine voice as usual, N’Dour takes command early and often, though he generously showcases his fellow band members and background vocalists as well. The live segments are bolstered by canned video and interview footage, but it’s the concert performances that elucidate why N’Dour is considered one of Africa’s most important artists.
