Capercaillie
Grace & Pride: The Anthology 2004-1984
Sanctuary/Valley Entertainment

By Paul-Emile Comeau

Published September 27, 2005

Over the course of a 20-year span Capercaillie established itself as one of the world’s most innovative and preeminent Celtic bands. The proof is in the accomplishments: over a million albums sold worldwide; silver and gold albums in the U.K.; the first Gaelic Top 40 single; music and appearance in the film Rob Roy. This 38-track double anthology, which draws from each of the band’s 15 albums but also includes a few unreleased or rare tracks, offers a sample of the group’s work in reverse chronology, which allows one to effectively trace the group’s music back to its beginnings. One is struck by how steadfast the group’s musical vision has been over the years. Karen Matheson’s pristine voice has been at the heart of the group throughout and the tracks selected for the anthology are of consistently high quality. Capercaillie’s repertoire proves that old Gaelic songs can be highly appealing to a modern audience. Grace & Pride is the type of anthology that new fans of Celtic music and long-time Capercaillie devotees will both want in their collection.
