Scottish Women
Greentrax
By Marty Lipp

Published September 9, 2005

The prototypical and still unsurpassed instrument for communicating human emotions is the human voice and this CD celebrates the well-modulated voice as modulated by a collection of Scottish women. Singing singly and in glorious harmony, these Scottish women toured Scotland, performing both Scottish and Gaelic songs with an ad hoc band of capable sidemen and women. The songs and women conjure up the various facets of the traditional ways of women in the old country, from randy young maidens to mourning widows. "Canan Nan Gaidheal" proves to be a lovely old anthem, "Griogal Cridhe" from the 16th century shows off the collective beauty of all the assembled women. The 13 artists (including one all-female trio) do their job efficiently even if it's hard to get a true sense of them individually from the carousel spin of a CD. Undoubtedly, many have fine back catalogs, but listeners would be hard-pressed to know which to pursue. Still, the album itself is an overdue reminder that while Irish music is better-known, Scottish music has much to be proud of.
