Azymuth
Partido Novo
Farout Recordings

By Sari Heifetz

Published February 17, 2006

Azymuth began as founding members of Brazil's ’60s lounge and jazz scene, particularly trailblazing the borders between bossa nova, rock and electronic beats that have now found their way up from the underground. Azymuth has collaborated with masters like Chick Corea, Stevie Wonder, Joe Henderson and Deodato. They are true urban jazz musicians of Rio de Janeiro, churning out sounds that rise, float and soar deep into an ethereal realm. Partido Novo is a culmination of funky samba sets blended with jazzy interludes, yet bound to satisfy a young and electrified audience, as they work with Jazzanova and other U.K. producers to get that space-age sound in the mix. The title track wins all, but "Tempo Classico" ("Classic Times") and "Rede de Espera" ("Waiting Web") reflect luminescence and love. The first part of the album is far superior to later tracks, but if an expression of jazz is what you crave and respect, Azymuth comes through with an edge of broken funk and samba, dancing "Livro como um Passaro" ("Free as a bird").
