By Ernest Barteldes

Published September 23, 2005

On this new release, the Sao Paulo-born musician takes a time warp as he re-creates the sounds of the samba and funk fusion developed in the late ’60s by the likes of Jorge Benjor and the late Tim Maia. Mostly through original songs, he uses his Stevie Wonder-sounding voice in songs that sound that sound that have been around forever, such as the rhythm-rich opening track, “Guerreiro”(Warrior)” and “Tudo Bem Malandro”(It’s AllRight, Bro), where he uses an ancient-sounding Moog as a backdrop to the song’s mostly acoustic sound. Listen to “You Haven’t Done Nothing”(the only English-language track in the album) and his collaboration with Tropicalistas’ Arnaldo Antunes in the soul-driven “Sertão Urbano” (Urban Country).
