Gabriela Anders
Last Tango In Rio
Narada

By Stacy Meyn

Published September 13, 2005

Gabriela Anders went from studying classical guitar and piano in Argentina to voice in New York City. Her father Jorge played jazz sax and the effects rubbed off, since Gabriela became the first artist signed to WarnerJazz from an unsolicited tape. She?Js worked with Grover Washington, Jr., George Duke, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Thalia and Tito Puente, among others. But no matter how jazzy she gets, Anders has carried the tropical torch through several primarily self-penned albums, adding a little Latin fire (Argentine and Brazilian) to her sound. Last Tango In Rio is of course no different, as Anders applies her sultry pipes to oft-covered opener "You Go To My Head" and does justice to Billie Holiday's seminal "God Bless The Child." Anders gets down-homey with a beat during "The Buenos Aires Mix" and reveals what must be an ongoing adoration of Holiday on "Body And Soul." Actually, Anders' sound evokes Stan Getz with Astrud Gilberto, and jazz purists and Latin style aficionados alike will enjoy Last Tango In Rio?Iby no means her final release.
