By Ernest Barteldes

Published September 25, 2008

After 25 years in the music business, one expects that this legendary Brazilian guitarist would just sit back and enjoy the fruits of his career while releasing uninspired albums. Santos, however, would not go out on such an ungraceful note. Instead, he gets inspiration from his Rio surroundings to surprise the listener with gems like “Boa Vida,” a laid-back samba about the need to work hard in order to provide for the needs of one's lover. Also noteworthy is the highly refreshing R&B-tinged “Olhos de Jabuticaba,” one of the highlights at his live set at Brazilian Day 2008 in New York. He waxes about the end of a bad weekend on “Domingo Maldito” with heavy guitars and and angry vocals that signal for an even worse Monday. He then goes into a celebratory mode on “Seu Aniversario,” a tune – according to the lyrics- intended to be spun on one's birthday, which makes this CD a great alternative for that Brazilian-themed party.
