Trio Mocoto

Published June 22, 2006

Trio Mocotó is probably best known as the backup band for Brazilian legend Jorge Ben in the late 60’s and early 70’s. They released a few solo albums in the 70’s, and then were never heard from again. Now, thanks to the hipsters at Six Degrees Records, Trio Mocotó is back. Even the cover art, reminiscent of the “Fat Albert” cartoon series, lets us know we’re in for a 70’s groove. Trio Mocotó stays true to its roots as one of the pioneers of the “samba soul” sound which became so popular in the 70’s and which is currently being rediscovered and updated by new generations of fans both in Brazil and abroad. The sound, greatly influenced by the American “Black Power” movement, blends samba, and American style R&B and soul—sort of a Brazilian version of Earth Wind and Fire. The tracks have a light, funky, soulful sound. And even though they’re picking up where they left off, the new disk, the trio's first in 26 years, still sounds fresh.
