Algerian vocalist Kadda Cherif Hadria is mining some potent new territory with this release. His throaty, impassioned vocals find their way into settings that include inviting dance grooves, and more traditional instrumentation like the oud and ney flute. But there are also convincing hints of flamenco, hard-driving funk, and lovely arrangements for string quartet. Cherif Hadria sings with convincing passion and vocal dexterity of troubles in love, family relationships and his deep ties to Algeria. All this eclecticism is genuinely creative and deeply musical, and this collection is well worth hearing.
