Cirque Du Soleil
Verakai
RCA Victor

By MILOS MASSAMOUR

Published April 19, 2006

An awe-inspiring achievement in theatrical arts, Cirque Du Soleil is a unique live production featuring mind-boggling performances by contortionists, acrobats, jugglers, clowns, trapeze acts and  musicians, among numerous other top-class artists. Though there’s no substitute for the live show (even the televised events on Bravo don’t compare to what goes on en vivo), Verakai stands alone as an epic composition moving unfettered through time and geographical limitations, passing through the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Africa, Arabia, Asia and the Americas. Composed by Violaine Corradi (who scored 1999’s Dralion), and produced by Nitin Sawhney (Paul McCartney, Sting, Sinead O’Connor), Verakai is the most modern sounding of the Cirque’s seven previous scores. Integrating a seamless fusion of warm electronic beats and samples with live instruments, vocalists span several languages with linguistic dexterity. Melancholy and festive violins, mischievous accordions, tribal rhythms and operatic-to-jazzy voices swirl in a constant flow that will please fans of both Yann Tiersen and Transglobal Underground. Verakai translates to “wherever” in Romany, the language of gypsies, suggesting that the here-and-now is the wings of the nomadic spirit. Get ready to fly.
