Billing itself as a “Love Letter to the Big Easy,” BBVD celebrates the raucous R&B music found in the steamy byways of New Orleans. Save My Soul, the group’s fifth album, is overflowing with boogie-woogie grooves, double-time shuffles, swing and other sounds that go party in the night. Paying homage to New Orleans music greats like Professor Longhair, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Fats Domino, most of the music was composed by prolific bandleader Scotty Morris: he wrote most of the 10 tracks in mere weeks despite gigging over 100 concerts per year. The ribald freshness and mischievous virtuosity is evident throughout, as Save My Soul runs the gamut of Mardi Gras styles. While the young septet is certainly serious about its collective chops, BBVD delights in tongue-in-cheek lyrics and playful arrangements.
