Dance Like Flames
Borealis

By Paula Kirman

Published April 27, 2007

Canadian folk/roots band Tanglefoot is one of the country’s most active touring bands. Their wide following goes from coast to coast and far beyond the Canadian border. Dance Like Flames is the band’s first album of new material in four years, following numerous personnel changes. The biggest shift in the band’s acoustic sound, which borrows greatly from Celtic and French folk traditions, is the addition of Sandra Swannell on violin and vocals–the first female vocalist to ever perform with Tanglefoot. Fans will certainly not be disappointed–this is more of the toe-tapping, energetic material that has made the band such a live draw, as displayed on its previous release, 2003’s Captured Live. Fortunately, band members’ musical prowess comes across just as well in the studio, including a very homey feel from the storytelling lyrics in these original compositions–which were, appropriately enough, recorded in the band members’ home studios.
