Lucky Peterson
Black Midnight Sun
FDM

By SUSANA SCHROEDER

Published May 30, 2006

Some oldies but goodies get a funky, soulful-sounding treatment on Lucky Peterson’s Black Midnight Sun. Peterson knows how to work it on organ and guitar, in the songs he chooses and the musicians on the album. He’s also got the funk with Parliament/Funkadelic alumnus Jerome “Bigfoot” Brailey on drums. Black Midnight Sun starts with soft bass licks from Bill Laswell and bursts into a cover of Muddy Waters’ “Herbert Harper’s Free Press.” Other classics include songs by Mick Jagger (“Lucky In Love”), Syl Johnson (“Is It Because I’m Black”), Johnny Taylor (“Jody’s Got Your Girl And Gone”), James Brown (“Talkin’ Loud And Saying Nothing”), and Sly Stone (“Thank You For Talkin’ To Me Africa”). On the title track the listener gets an inkling of how tight the horn section is, left to wish they were featured more. Overall, the album has a constant, fluid sound and stays truly bluesy with no odd rock aberrations and without sounding repetitive. One couldn’t expect less from such a gifted musician.
