Beenie Man
The Magnificent
2b1 Multimedia Inc.

By Stacy Meyn

Published March 3, 2006

Encouraged by his uncle Sydney Wolf (one of Jimmy Cliff's drummers), five-year-old Moses Anthony "Beenie Man" Davis was toasting in Jamaican sound systems. Bunny "Striker" Lee helped with releasing The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder and Beenie would work with Sly and Robbie and Barrington Levy, garnering popularity rivaling Buju Banton. Fearless and inventive, Beenie linked with non-reggae artists Doug E. Fresh, R. Kelly and Arturo Sandoval—and was naughty (Beenie, Snoop Dogg, and Ja Rule were charged with using indecent language at a Jamaican festival). The Grammy-nominated Beenie and producer Lee offer the humbly titled The Magnificent. An earlier version's racy cover art lurks on the CD. The tracks are more ferocious. Beenie returns to his roots, toasting over tunes by classic performers the Aggovators and Sly and Robbie and the Taxi Gang. Beenie flexes and finesses on "Murder," "Body Good Like Gold," "Warn Them" and "Follow Mi Lyrics." He knows his status and makes sure you do too with "You A Fool," "The Greatest" and "The Magnificent Beenie Man." He even has his own dance: "Do The Beenie Shuffle."
