Dub Syndicate
Acres of Space
EFA

By Andy Kaufmann

Published June 22, 2006

Praise Jah! After a three-year absence, dub mastermind Style Scott, whose sublime drumming has appeared on scores of albums over the past two decades, has finally resurfaced with his most noteworthy collective, the pioneering Dub Syndicate. Mixed by long-time collaborator Adrian Sherwood, Acres of Space offers the usual and expected palette of bouncy, vibrant colors. That being said, the riffs are executed so smoothly, so seamlessly, that even unenlightened listeners will have a hard time resisting the impulse to guzzle a six-pack of Red Stripe. Big Youth continues his association with the group, welcoming, among others, militant DJ Capleton, guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith of Bob Marley fame, and bassist Christopher “Pow” Meredith, who graces Lauryn Hill’s best-selling The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. You don’t need to know that this searing set was recorded at Jamaica’s Tuff Gong Studios to believe in the album’s authenticity; all you need to do is feel the vibe and you’ll comprehend everything the musicians behind this fine work ever hoped you would understand.
