The Mighty Diamonds
The Best Of The Mighty Diamonds
Times Square Records

By Paula E. Kirman

Published September 8, 2005

The Mighty Diamonds formed in the Trenchtown area of Kingston in 1969. Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson have released more than 40 albums in over three decades, continue to tour and are known for their tight reggae sound and lyrics that reflect both heavy social concerns and the lighter sides of life and love. The Best Of The Mighty Diamonds is a double-CD that re-releases two of the band’s classic albums, Pass The Kouchie and Tour The World. This release is of particular note to U.K. fans, where neither album has been available for the past 10 years or so. In any case, the music has a clear, classic quality to it that stands up to time. Pass The Kouchie is the more socially conscious release of the two. Reggae fans will likely immediately recognize the song “Pass The Kouchie” as “Pass The Dutchie,” as it was titled when covered by Musical Youth in the ’80s. Tour The World is slightly lighter in terms of musical feel and lyrics, but is also timeless and enjoyable.
