SOCA 101: VOL. 2
VP

By ADRIENNE GUSOFF

Published March 3, 2006

Soca is, above all, Carnival music, mainly from Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of limbo, calypso and the steel band. It’s party music at its best. Not only does it compel you to shake your booty; it also has a sense of humor—in the lyrics, the subject matter, and in the use of voice and beat. Here, the personality and talents of each artist shine distinctly. There’s Red Plastic Bag with the buoyant and somewhat silly “Ragga Ragga.” The Mighty Sparrow’s “Tobago Girl” tells the story of a man who sneaks into Tobago, just for the love of the women. Lord Kitchener’s “Bee’s Melody” is an amusing tale of an attack by musical killer bees whose stings cause the singer to “dance,” thus inspiring him to create music. While there are certainly more outstanding collections of Carnival and soca music, this volume offers plenty of great cuts.
