If you’re new to world music, this collection of mostly traditional genre offerings (that is, not fusion or multculti amalgams) is a great place to start. Culling from several classic albums, it features Buena Vista Social Club, Ali Farka Touré, and Afro-Cuban All Stars—venerated artists that have received much attention in recent years. Lesser-known but worthwhile figures like Sierra Maestra, Dimi Mint Abba, and Guillermo Portabales are also included. One must wonder, however, why the producers occasionally used multiple tracks by the same artists. For example, Touré, BVSC, Rubén González and Toumani Diabaté each have two songs on this compilation. Given the breadth of talented world music artists on World Circuit, others could’ve been included, representing a wider variety of genres. Nonetheless, it’s a well-made assemblage with concise, informative liner notes. Here’s hoping The World Circuit will continue to produce terrific anthologies that will further run the gamut.
