BANGKOK, Thailand – Todd “Thongdee” Lavelle, Singha Beer and the city of Bangkok will be hosting the Rhythm of the Earth World Festival, to be held on January 18-22, 2006, on the Rama 8 Bridge along the Chao Praya River in Bangkok.
This festival celebrates World Music - World Bar-B-Q - World Voices with musical acts from 15 countries (e.g. Burkina Faso, Sri Lanka, Canada, India, Brazil, Ireland, Ethiopia, Australia and the USA). There will also be nightly celebrations of Thailand's minority groups-Akha, Mon, Puthai as well as special shows by blind and autistic performers.
There will be a wide range of traditional cuisine from around the world in 12 International Bar-B-Q stalls (e.g. Egypt, Mongolia, Australia, etc.) and the Best of Thailand's Cuisine in more than 30 food stands. Minority voices from the hilltribes of Thailand have never before been featured on a main stage, much less represented in a World Festival.
This year, in the four corners of the festival’s grounds, we will be featuring art and crafts from the hilltribes in the “Corners of Creation”. There will be picture corners, traditional instruments corners, traditional games and puppetry corners. The festival benefits traditional/disabled artists in teaching their craft to the next generation and in preserving folk music and traditional musical instruments from Southeast Asia. Thanks to our sponsors, all events are FREE to the public.
