The ceremony was hosted by President George W. Bush and took place in the Grand Foyer of the White House for members of the Senate and the House Of Representatives. The initiative affects many children in Africa, so it is a cause very dear to the Choir. They were honored to perform to celebrate its expansion and renewal.
 
H.R. 5501, sponsored by Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde, is The United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008. H.R. 5501 will reauthorize for an additional 5 years the global AIDS initiative President George W. Bush launched in his 2003 State of the Union speech. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, originally focused on 15 poor nations in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. This bill expands PEPFAR to provide more prevention and treatment around the world.
 
The African Children’s Choir is a world renowned choir has been working with the most vulnerable children in Africa for nearly 25 years, raising awareness of the plight of the orphaned and abandoned, but also showing the beauty, dignity, and potential of the African child. With a focus on education the Choir is currently caring for several thousand underprivileged children throughout Africa. These are children who could have lost all hope, but have overcome their circumstances and now are making a positive impact on society by being a voice for millions of children suffering in Africa.
 
The African Children’s Choir has appeared on just about every major network on shows such as Good Morning America, American Idol – Idol Gives Back Show and Season Finale, The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and more. The Choir has also participated in many other special events – performing with Tony Bennett at the Clinton Global Initiatives Event at Carnegie Hall and performing at the Liberty Medal Awards honoring Bono. Children from the Choir were featured in The Gap’s high profile RED ad campaign with John Legend.
