A multi-Grammy Award nominee, Juan De Marcos’ mission has been to preserve the music of Cuba while addressing its future. Since the Afro Cuban All Stars’ 1999 much-admired recording, Distinto, Diferente, De Marcos’ next production has been anxiously anticipated. Finally, on September 13th, De Marcos returns with Step Forward, the first studio album by the Afro Cuban All Stars in over six years.
A fantastic endeavor featuring over fifty musicians assembled under the Afro Cuban All Stars banner, Step Forward spans the entire spectrum of Afro Cuban rhythms—from Contradansse, the precursor of Danzón (Cuba’s national dance) to the latest Cuban musical extrapolation, Timba; from Arsenio Rodríguez classics to Juan De Marcos’ original creations and the hip compositions of other members of the band.
