Arturo O'Farrill With The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra Announce Fall Season At New York City's Symphony Space
Published September 25, 2008

Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra return to Symphony Space for a second season of hard hitting music founded on both the concepts of swing and clave. Hailed by critics and fans throughout the world, the orchestra breaks paradigms, crosses genres and proves that Jazz is the music of all the Americas, and indeed the world.

Last seasons program included music from Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Brazil and even such exotic locales as the Bronx and the Borscht Belt. Guest composers included Tom Harrel, Guillermo Klein, Papo Vazquez, Gabriel Alegria and Erica Von Kleist amongst others. Guest performers included Herman Olivera, Badal Roy, Gabriel Alegria, Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton, Paul Leiberman and Paul Shapiro.

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) has been highly visible since its departure from Jazz at Lincoln Center, moving uptown to its gracious new home, Symphony Space. The orchestra has just released “Song For Chico” (ZoHo) which has received unanimous praise from critics and fans alike, receiving extensive airplay throughout the world and singled out for top ten lists by radio stations across the jazz spectrum. Artistic director Arturo O'Farrill was profiled recently in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Jazz Times and Downbeat.

The new season begins with a night of suites, extended works for Afro Latin Big Band that promise a night of joy for both feet and mind. The season continues with an evening devoted to the music of Brazil and its resident genius Hermeto Pascoal. The final concert will be a further exploration of the music of all the Americas, a follow up to our concert entitled Music Nueva.

Come help create the new revolution in big band jazz, the one that truly embraces, the future of this music, the one that moves beyond what’s comfortable and into a new international vision of the music that Dizzy Gillespie foresaw.
