Bebel Gilberto Expands Her Creative Territory On New Album Momento, Out April 24
Published February 9, 2007

Drawing inspiration from friends, family and musical roots worldwide, Grammy-nominated artist Bebel Gilberto has crafted Momento, or “living in the moment” (out April 24 on Six Degrees/Ziriguiboom/Crammed Discs), a collection of intoxicating originals and three covers that celebrate life and love and showcase her talents as a producer and singer/songwriter.

“I take total responsibility for this album,” says Bebel Gilberto, who co-produced the CD. “I took a lot of risks: trying different approaches, different sounds and getting away from the perfectionism of the studio. This one is more about my feelings. It reflects who I am now, as a person and an artist.”

Recorded in three separate sessions in London, Rio de Janeiro, and New York, Momento is a natural progression from her two highly celebrated prior albums- 2000’s TantoTempo and 2004’s Bebel Gilberto, which hit #1 on the Billboard World Music chart and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album. The 11 tracks showcase the full panoply of styles that compose Bebel’s subtle and distinctive sound: “Caçada”, a traditional Brazilian song with Forro influences originally written and recorded by her uncle Chico Buarque, the sultry and funky “Bring Back The Love” (co-written and produced with Sabina Sciubba and Didi Gutman of Brazilian Girls), an ethereal rendition of Cole Porter’s “Night and Day”, that features a cast of Brazilian hornplayers whom Bebel has toured with over the years, and “Os Novos Yorkinos”, a trip hop samba-flavored tribute to New York City. Bebel recruited the productions skills of Didi Gutman and Sabina Sciubba for two other tracks, as well as British producer Guy Sigsworth for five tracks.

The hypnotic club track “Bring Back The Love” is available as a digital-only remix release in two volumes, starting with volume one on iTunes as of Jan. 9 and volume two on February 13. The song receives superb remix treatment from Scandinavian "Space Disco" master Prins Thomas, up and coming texturalists Mungolian Jetset,, Bombay Dub Orchestra and Electronic dance masters Stuhr. Members of the Brazilian Girls supplied the backing track, a funky pastiche that blends 70s wha wha keyboards, bossa nova guitar, a percolating rhythm and samba percussion accents.

Six Degrees is releasing Momento as part of their "Six Degrees Travel Series" through their partnership with Ziriguiboom, Crammed Discs' Brazilian imprint, that is acclaimed around the world as the leading source for modern Brazilian music, from electronic to bossa to samba soul. Ziriguiboom is dedicated to presenting original aspects of Brazilian music to an international audience.
