Columbian Singer-Songwriter Soraya, 1969-2006
Published May 12, 2006

Colombian singer-songwriter Soraya, best known for the songs "De Repente," "Llevame" and the Latin Grammy-winning "Casi," died May 10 after a years-long battle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed with Stage Three of the disease in 2000, and successfully underwent treatment, but word began to circulate earlier this year that she'd suffered a relapse. She continued to work steadily despite illness, releasing her most recent album in 2005.

Gabriel Abaroa, president of the Latin Recording Academy, issued the following statement: "A true artist and passionate activist, Soraya tirelessly devoted her time and energy to finding a cure for breast cancer as well as helping raise awareness on early detection and prevention in the Hispanic community. After conquering her intial battle with this life-threatening disease, her self-titled Soraya won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album at the 5th Latin Grammy Awards in 2004, the inaugural year for this category. The Latin community and the world have lost a gracious and dedicated woman, but her legacy will continue to inspire us all."
