Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley made history last week when he became the first Reggae artist to win a Grammy outside of the Reggae album category. The youngest son of Bob Marley posted a win for Best Reggae Album for his acclaimed Tuff Gong/Universal album Welcome To Jamrock and then went on to win another Grammy for “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” for the “Welcome To Jamrock” track. Marley’s win in the Urban/Alternative Category, marks the first time that a Reggae artist has received a Grammy outside of the Reggae music category.
This is Damian’s third Grammy win overall. In addition to the two he was awarded last week, Marley won a Grammy Award in 2001 for his Halfway Tree album.
Damian celebrated his Grammy wins by a performance on the outdoor stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, performing his brand new single “Beautiful” as well as “Welcome To Jamrock” on air and eventually treating the standing room only crowd to a six-song set.
Next up for Marley is a trip overseas to tour dates in Europe, Australia and Japan. Marley is one of the rare artists appearing both at Bonnaroo and Coachella in the U.S. later this year.
