The infectious music of Kálmán Balogh and the Gypsy Cimbalom Band has never been more energetic than on their September 20 release Live In Germany, which captures the true excitement of their live concerts. Kálmán Balogh, considered one of the greatest virtuosos of the Cimbalom (a 36-stringed, 16th. Century European version of the hammered dulcimer) collaborates here with classical, jazz and folk musicians in this program of traditional tunes, transformed into artful, exciting renditions of modern dance music which he calls Gypsy Jazz. Part of our Digital Audiophile Series, this release is lavishly packaged with a 24-page booklet written by the noted music scholar Michael Beckerman, NYU Professor of Music and writer for the NY Times.
Balogh was born in Hungary and his roots stem back to one of the most famous musical Roma dynasty, having learned the cimbalom from his uncle, the legendary Elemér Balogh. Kálmán completed his formal music education at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He received the Second prize in the Aladár Rácz cimbalom competition in 1987. Balogh was featured performer with Andre Heller’s Gypsy Show Magneten, and the Budapest Ensemble’s Csárdás Show. He was the musical director and arranger of the Gypsy Spirit Show, which toured North America to critical acclaim from Coast to Coast. He is a unique musician and he is at home in several musical genres: classical, folk, world, klezmer and jazz. Balogh performed in the USA and Canada with several popular bands on many occasions, his own Kálmán Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Band, the Ökrös Ensemble, Muzsikás band with Márta Sebestyén and the Joel Rubin Ensemble. He played as a soloist with Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony and the Bend Oregon Festival Orchestra. He has appeared on over 100 recordings around the world and is probably the most sought-out cimbalom player today. The Boston Globe called his playing “demonic” and the New York Times reviewed him as “dazzling.” .”
