Rykodisc has inked a deal for US distribution with Brussels-based label Crammed Discs. Ryko will release all of the current Crammed titles not licensed by Six Degrees Records and will roll out the impressive Crammed back catalogue over the next several years.
"Crammed has consistently brought great world music to the intelligent music fan,” says Rykodisc president Bill Hein. “This partnership pairs up Rykodisc, voted this year’s NARM small label of the year, with Crammed Discs, the premiere world music label. We are excited to represent and help expand this celebrated brand stateside."
"We are very excited about the distribution partnership with Rykodisc, " says Crammed co-founder Hanna Gorjaczkowska. "We have been looking for sometime for the right partner in the USA and now I think we've found one. We are very happy to join this well respected and very effective company."
The first Crammed titles, to be released on September 27, include the critically acclaimed Konono No. 1 which the Village Voice described as "...exotic thrills in a Congolese band that electrifies traditional instruments with junkyard scraps." Also to be released on October 4 are "Aparelhagem" from the Brazilian artist DJ Dolores and the self-titled debut of the Gypsy band Mahala Rai Banda. Additional releases from the fathers of samba soul, Trio Mocotó 's "Beleza! Beleza! Beleza!", and "Cabin In The Sky", from legendary avant-rock/electronica band Tuxedomoon, will bow on October 25.
"We are happy to see that the audience for imaginative, eclectic music has now grown considerably and that people are excited to hear albums which boldly fuse electronica, rock and world music." says Crammed co-founder and A&R head Marc Hollander, who received the WOMEX Award in 2004.
Ever since its inception in 1981, Crammed Discs has developed a high profile world-wide as one of the most exciting, adventurous and boundary-breaking independent labels. They have previously produced and released a rich spectrum of music that includes titles from international artists such as Bebel Gilberto, Zap Mama, John Lurie, Taraf de Haïdouks, Sussan Deyhim, Bel Canto, Carl Craig, Snooze, Suba, Cibelle and Celso Fonseca.
Rykodisc was founded in 1983. A two-time winner of the Grammy Award for Best World Album, Rykodisc's commitment to musical diversity makes this new arrangement with Crammed a natural extension of the company's artistic vision.
