New York World Festival To Hit Central Park SummerStage
Published September 7, 2007

Presented as part of Central Park's SummerStage, this year's New York World Festival brings top international performing artists together with New York-based artists for a meeting of cultures from around the Mediterranean. The September 16 event is a bi-annual tradition presented by World Music Institute and the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, two of New York's premier presenters of traditional arts.

The festival features the rich traditions of Morocco, Greece and Spain. The line-up includes the extraordinary Hassan Hakmoun performing ecstatic music and dance from Moroccan Gnawa trance ceremonies the Orchestra of Tangier, a leading Moroccan ensemble specializing in Andalusian music, under the direction of the legendary Ahmed Zaitouni Amalia Papastefanou, the renowned singer from Rhodes who performs the Greek island repertoire known as nisiotika, with master clarinetist Lefteris Bournias, innovative keyboardist/music director Yiannis Anastasopoulos, and musicians on violin, laouto, and percussion Pontic lyra virtuoso Christos Tiktapanidis performing soulful melodies and energetic dance tunes and the Dimonis d'Albopàs, from Mallorca, Spain, who will open the show with a festive and colorful parade of masked “demons,” drummers and bagpipers.

The festival also includes the following pre-concert "artist encounter" workshops:
1:30 pm Moroccan Gnawa trance music with Hassan Hakmoun
2:15 pm Greek Dances (syrto, ballos, issios and sousta) from the Dodecanese Islands
