SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2006 — A treasured Bay Area tradition since 1938, Stern Grove Festival announced its 69th Season of 10 admission-free concerts, every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from June 18 through August 20, 2006 at the recently remodeled Sigmund Stern Grove, located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard in San Francisco.

Stern Grove Festival’s 69th Season is made possible with support from Major Sponsor Wells Fargo, Grants for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and media sponsors SF Weekly/East Bay Express, KPIX Channel 5, and 7x7 Magazine.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
June 18 – Aimee Mann and Seu Jorge
Stern Grove Festival’s 69th Season kicks off with the incomparable singer-songwriter Aimee Mann. Acclaimed for the narrative quality of her music, Mann most recently released The Forgotten Arm, an album recorded almost entirely live. The New York Times Magazine observed, “she is widely considered by her peers and music critics alike to be one of the finer songwriters of her generation.” Her Academy-Award nominated song “Save Me,” was one of eight songs written for the soundtrack to the film Magnolia.

A multifaceted Brazilian artist, Seu Jorge opens the afternoon with his soulful blend of moody vocals and samba rhythms. Jorge first came to international attention for his portrayal of Knockout Ned in the critically lauded film City of God.  Jorge’s covers of David Bowie songs for the soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou led Bowie himself to proclaim, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

Concert sponsored by Villas Parkmerced.

June 25 – Amadou & Mariam and Otis Taylor Band
Amadou & Mariam have already taken Europe by storm and are now set to unleash their unique mélange of Malian music and blues rhythms at Stern Grove Festival. Their latest album Dimanche à Bamako has sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide and made its U.S. debut in August 2005 to rave reviews.

Billboard magazine called Otis Taylor “one of the most innovative, thought-provoking blues artists to emerge in the last 20 years.” Taylor’s richly textured songs draw from the rawest forms of roots styles, imbued with a socially conscious lyricism.

July 2 – Rebirth Brass Band and Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie
As one of the best-known contemporary New Orleans brass ensembles, the Rebirth Brass Band electrifies audiences with the hallmark qualities of the traditional brass band sound reborn for a new generation. With appearances at virtually every major festival in the U.S. and Europe, Re
