Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will release Pete Seeger's 'American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 4' on May 23. The fourth entry in a five-volume work originally issued by Folkways Records between 1957 and 1962, this series is considered a cornerstone of the American legend's incredible catalog. Newly remastering the classic material, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is supplementing the CDs with additional Seeger recordings from the same time period.
With a career spanning more than six decades, Pete Seeger is one of the most important musical artists of all time. During the height of the 1960s folk revival, 'American Favorite Ballads' became essential listening for students and performers of folk music. In a recent New Yorker profile, Alec Wilkinson characterized Seeger as "a figure of undeniable stature." A number of songs on Bruce Springsteen's new album 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' can be heard on the 'American Favorite Ballads' series.
Covering themes from love to murder, tales of travel and anti-oppression songs, 'American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 4' includes Seeger's performances of "You Are My Sunshine," "Summertime," "John Hardy," "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor" and many others. With these recordings, Seeger intende both to entertain and teach younger generations the traditional folk songs associated with America. In keeping with that goal, full lyrics and annotations for all songs are included.
In an extensive essay on Seeger's Folkways recordings included in the package, Guy Logsdon wrote, "Without doubt no other individual in history has lifted his or her voice to the millions of people -- all ages, all religions, all ethnic groups and all nations -- as has Pete Seeger."
