ABOUT GLOBAL RHYTHM FOUNDER AND ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER ALECIA J. COHEN
A leading authority on world music in the United States, Alecia J. Cohen is the founder and Associate Publisher of the trend-setting GLOBAL RHYTHM Magazine. She has played a major role in the introduction of today’s new international music culture to a wide-spanning readership. Ms. Cohen is a much sought-after expert and consultant in the music business and related fields.
Ms. Cohen grew up in Miami, and was originally inspired by the many varied nationalities and cultures situated there. These multicultural influences first emerged at age 12 in the art collages that she created from articles and photo images in periodicals including Rolling Stone and National Geographic. After graduating from Curry College in New England, where she earned a B.A. degree in Urban Anthropology and a concentration in Fine Arts, along with a minor in English literature, she took a management post at the Talking Drum, an African art gallery where her responsibilities included research, display, sales and restoration of ancient and contemporary African art. She then came to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, where she assisted in the research on Showa and Ngende textiles of Zaire. She also conducted research for the launch of an Andean textile exhibit, and completed research of Egyptian beads of the Late Period. Her background and experiences perfectly prepared Ms. Cohen for her next endeavor.
In 1992, the then 21-year-old launched a newsletter aimed at spotlighting emerging ethnic music trends, thereby helping American consumers expand their horizons and lifestyles through exposure to international culture, particularly world music, film, food and travel. Today GLOBAL RHYTHM is the leading publication in its field.
