Looking back on Brazilian music’s global popularization, the turn that jazz took in the 1960s recalls names like Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Sergio Mendes. But most North Americans know little of bossa nova’s seminal domestic jazz strains, which produced a distinctive Brazilian acoustic imprint that retains a thoroughly contemporary feel some four decades later. Compiled by classically trained Italian DJ-producer Nicola Conte (of the acid-jazz Fez collective, based in the Adriatic port of Bari), Viagem assembles a lesser-known brace of superb vintage sounds from Wanda Sá (an airy essay of Jobim’s “Vivo Sonhando”), Bossa Jazz Trio (Jorge Ben’s “Vamos Embora Uau”), Hector Costita (reimagining Horace Silver’s “Tokio”), Zimbo Trio (a bluesy, hardbopping “Zimbo Samba”), Sansa Trio (a hot “Samba em Blue”), Trio Maraya (laying down hypnotic vocal harmonies on “Canto de Ossanha,” by Baden Powell and Vinicius De Moraes), Djalma Dias (Baden Powell’s “Cidade Vazia”), and Tenorio Jr. (on his own “Nebulosa” and “Samadhi”).
